Schooled in English

The other night, I went to visit some local friends living in the dorms. They then busted out the accordion and started singing songs. We varied between Chinese songs and English songs.

One of the girls loves English songs. But sometimes, she would sing an English song perfectly, and I wouldn't recognize it. Most of them are from the states, but some of them are from the UK. She kept asking me if I knew Westlife. The most embarrassing part is that sometimes I would know the song, but I didn't know the lyrics well. This girl asked me if we could sing Kelly Clarkson. I love Kelly Clarkson, but I only sing "Since You Been Gone" on Karaoke. The girl never heard that song (probably because it is not a slow ballad). Instead, she wanted to sing Breakaway. So I tried to sing with her, but she had to feed me the English lyrics. How embarrassing it is to have a non-native English speaker have to teach me the words to Kelly Clarkson. She also knew all the words to The Carpenters song "Yesterday Once More." I could only contribute on the "sha-la-la" and the "wo-wo-wo."

I now have to go study more slow ballads. It sounds like Richard Marx is a must know. I should have known for me to be successful here, I must learn my Marx.
