A couple of weeks ago, I realized something. I was talking to some friends here and told them it was cold. And they said, "of course it is, it is fall." I said, "yes, I know it is fall," but I still felt like it didn't explain why it is cold. Later on, I realized what was the disconnect. I was saying that on the calendar, this time of year is called "fall," but I have never lived in a place where the fall season has a drastic change in weather. Looking at the places I have lived, Phoenix and LA really do not have seasons. Dallas has an interesting fall. It is hot one day, cold the next, and then the weather tosses back in forth between the two. Dallas does have change in the color of leaves though.
In the last two weeks, the temperature here started dropping. These days, it is now between 50-65 degrees F. And I am cold. Yesterday, I found myself wearing 6 layers for my top (2 long sleeve light jackets, one light sweater, one long sleeve shirt, one short sleeve shirt, and a tank top).
In same conversation with my friend, as mentioned above, I asked my friends if the weather here drops below freezing. This is how the conversation went.
One guy said, "you are kidding, right?"
Relieved I said, "oh good, I'm glad it doesn't drop below freezing.
The same guy said, "no, I thought you were kidding because for two months straight it is below freezing."
"Oh dear."
Hmm, I wonder how many layers I can wear and still move my arms.

bethany, i just had to comment on this.
the first time i lived in a winter climate was in CZ. buildings are well heated but winter is like 33 months long and pretty brutal. i wore three pairs of pants one time (cords and TWO pairs of thermals) and everybody thought i was crazy. but i was still cold. :( i can totally identify with 7 layers...i think i've even done that in texas. :) the worst is having to walk/bike everywhere...so you actually get sweaty underneath all those layers, but it takes forever to dry off b/c you have so many layers.
when (if?!) i get married, i want a long underwear shower. people think i'm kidding, but i'm not.
i totally feel for you!!!!!!! i do not envy you!! it's 90 degrees today. :)
will you have to shovel snow? i don't think so. i lived in a house, so i had to shovel snow. the worst is shoveling and then it snows the next day, and you have to shovel again. i grumbled a lot in my heart while i was doing it.
sorry i haven't emailed back...i've been sort of busy. relatively. i'm working today answering phones at KCBI. will write soon. love, carol
sounds delightful! it has cooled down about 5 degrees recently. although it's still hot, it's noticable. =)
maybe you should think about making a list of stuff for mom/dad to pick up for you at REI. i'm serious -- warm clothes but still lightweight. i'm starting of having pictures in my head of the pillsbury dough boy balancing on a bike.
Bethany, i can definitely relate, last winter here in the midwest was definitely eye opening for us. we always had on way more clothes than everyone else who has lived here. Even when it was high 60s last week our neighbors are all in short sleeves shirts and we are already wearing our jackets. They say you get used to it though in time...~r
