Apple Picking Saturday

Our school had a field trip today (Saturday). Two buses of maybe 60+ students ventured about 2 hours out of the city to a nature preserve... for some playing in the sand and... to pick apples. We had a blast, roaming around an apple grove with dozens of trees (a couple different kinds of apple trees)... to pick apples to our hearts content.

Most of the apples on the lower branches were either picked clean or were not yet ripe. So, I decided to do something that I've never done before but have always wanted to do... climb trees! The juicy, ripe, red apples... were definitely more abundant up at the top.

The apples here taste slightly different than State-side... they are sweeter and crisper. Bethany says they're similar to a "pink lady"... whatever that means. Typically, if we were to go to the market, we may buy 6-8 apples. But today, we came home with maybe... 60 apples? The plan is to 1) make an apple pie, 2) make apple sauce to store for the winter, 3) give some apples to friends, 4) and probably still have tons left over.

Bethany is excited at the possibilities...

While you were picking apples and enjoying them, we were fighting termites, and the rotted wood. Much prefer climbing apple trees! :-)
