One cultural tidbit I learned is that some local acquaintances, instead of saying, "Hello," and talking about the weather, they say, "Have you eaten yet?" At first I had no idea why they were asking. I wasn't sure if they wanted to ask me to eat with them. Later on, I realized that it is just a greeting.
The conversation is supposed to go, "Have you eaten yet?," you say "yes, have you eaten?," and then they say "yes" and then you walk away. It is always a little embarrassing when I have a late lunch or dinner because I have to say "no," which messes up the flow of conversation.
Therefore, to make sure conversations flow, I try to eat all meals during the right period of times.

I think people exchange that question only if it is closer to meal time, certainly not at 4 in the afternoon, but don't be surprise if they ask you that at 9p because some people eat late dinner, ha ha.(I am pretty sure they don't mean to invite you for a meal! Sorry)
