Our last two days in LA has been spent packing 4 suitcases to prepare for moving. Total, we are thinking of bringing 6 suitcases plus 2 carry-on bags. These 2 other suitcases and carry-on bags will come from the things left in Dallas.
So we worked hard on Tuesday night, and packed everything in 4 suitcases. But today, we went to Target and bought Space Saver bags. Yeah.

More things fit better. Here are our final weights for the bags (50 lbs. is the weight limit): 43 lbs, 47 lbs, 49 lbs, 49 lbs. I know, cutting it close. You may say to yourself, why not switch around the weight, but the space issue does not allow this to happen.
Wow, it took a lot of work, and a lot of having Alvin stand on a scale carrying a suitcase, but I am glad almost half of our packing is done.

Ahh, good question! We had a nice discussion about the physics of this problem while in the parking lot of Target after purchasing these bags.
Essentially... air weighs... nothing. That's why I weigh the same whether I'm sprawled out flat on the floor, or if I'm standing straight up with my lungs filled with air.
So, everything that goes in the space saver bag... weighs the same, whether the air is sucked out and the bag is compressed all small, or if the stuff is just sitting in the bag like normal.
That means that this just affects volume. We can fit more in our luggage bags now with the space saver bags, but the downside is that it's easier now, with more space, to get closer and closer to the weight limit.
But the compression bags still weigh something, right? So you're trading weight for space, to a certain degree. How heavy are the bags?

The weight of the bags is practically negligible. They're large, but they are the material of thick ziploc bags. So even the extra-large one you see in the pictures probably weighs no more than 1/4 pound.
