And then a few weeks ago, a truck parked in front of our downstairs gate, and we saw a rope thrown from the window upstairs down to the ground outside. What things might one try to move into a home by tying a rope around it and hoisting it up and through the window? Our first guess, of course, would be... a bunch of mannequins.
Most buildings here (and in China, actually) do not have elevators. Only buildings that are 7 stories or taller are required to have elevators. And so, it makes sense, I guess, why folks may try to do it this way instead of carrying them up the stairs.
Just as this group of 6 human torsos passed our window, we heard some sort of a commotion and then a yell and then... the 6 torsos decided to end it all, falling 5 stories back to the ground below.

Ouch for the mannequins! That's hilarious! I guess your neighbors are truly prone to dropping things. Perhaps they're actually artists and this is part of their recent exhibit and you're the first to "discover" it.
Talk about you being at the right place at the right time--must be fun looking out your window.

That's a great question. As I've experienced it, there are two kinds of households in this country.
First, there are those Chinese homes where, yes, you take off your shoes when you come into the home... and then you put on slippers. Yes, everybody wears slippers. Even Bethany and I wear slippers in the home nowadays. Why? Not because our feet are cold, but simply because things get pretty dusty pretty quickly. Not dirty per se, just dusty. And so... slippers are a must. Oh, and the 5-second rule does not apply here. Especially for gummy bears.
The second kind of home here is the "college student apartment." While I haven't seen the one upstairs, I have seen the one of a friend. Basically, most of these apartments are not renovated. What does that mean? Usually, it is a concrete shell - concrete floors, primer paint on the walls, no baseboards, a toilet and a sink, no stove, maybe a kitchen sink, and maybe a shower head. You and I would probably have a hard time imagining what it would be like to live there for a few years. In these homes, nobody takes their shoes off. And so... I am almost positive our upstairs neighbor wears heels. :)
